On this episode of Tales from the Trenches, James Roberts discusses designing an Exit Plan to equalize the estate among children, and the cost of inaction when business owners fail to plan for their eventual exit from the business.

James has a true passion to help business owners maximize their value, mitigate their risks and minimize their taxes paid. He is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (CFP) as well as a CERTIFIED EXIT PLANNER (CExP) Through his experiences working with business owners since before the Great Recession, James has learned through both experience and formal studies what it takes to navigate owners successfully towards their desired exit path.

James followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the University of Maryland. He then earned his Certificate in Financial Planning from the prestigious Georgetown University. James committed to and completed 10 courses specifically focused on exit and succession planning strategies and earned his Certified Exit Planner designation after it became clear he would be working with more business owners.

James married his beautiful wife, Carrie, in 2008. They welcomed their first son Landon into the world in 2011. Bentley followed in 2015. James sits on the Platoon 22 Nonprofit Board. In 2014, James was recognized as a Man of the Year finalist for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. He currently sits on various committees within the is organization.

Philanthropy is huge part of James’ personal life and something he introduces to every business owner he works with.
